Breed Notes - 15 Nov 2011
Somehow I can’t imagine the Sunday of Discover Dogs, at Earls Court, not being Remembrance Sunday. It always amazes me that it can go so quiet, so quickly, seconds before Big Ben chimes out 11.00 o’clock, a very moving experience that affects you deeply every year. Yes, it’s that time again, and as usual Lloyd and Maggie Spencer, with Janet organizing props and being chief photo enlarger, in control of “set up”, and what a wonderful job they made of it this year. Mid-way through the morning a smartly dressed gentleman, complete with lady photographer arrived, beaming, at our booth, to present us with a big rosette and a certificate displaying 1st place in the Working Group. The judges complimented us on the information, content and description, clear breed characteristics, and clever art-work. We were careful to display the KC notices, and five club members were wearing matching waistcoats. All in all, a big thank-you is due to the set-up trio. We may not be the biggest breed numerically, but we sure do our best at every opportunity to fly the flag. It was two very busy days but not so many real puppy enquiries, far more folk out with the family having fun on a gloomy damp Sunday. Very few folk got away without an “I’ve hugged a Hovawart today” sticker. Thank you all very much for your support, with a special vote of thanks to “Harry” who sat right in the front from 10.00 until 4.30 and was the first to field small children, pushchairs, balloons, disabled chairs, trolleys, and an assortment of other dogs with his tail wagging continuously. I think it is safe to say that all the dogs slept soundly on their journeys home. Lloyd, of course, made an appearance in the afternoon, to ensure the case is packed properly. I’m sure he doesn’t trust us to get it right….probably with justification.
I have spoken to Anne Travis, and I am happy to report that her five bitch puppies are all doing well, and have all now been spoken for. Anne has offered to hold the next committee meeting at her house at the end of the month, and I know I, for one, would be thrilled, because we get the cuddle the puppies, and they should be about 7 weeks – just gorgeous.
