Breed Notes - 17 Oct 2021
Again this week I have to start with an apology, although not my fault this time as the results for Bath were originally published incorrectly due to a muddle over ring numbers. Best of Breed was Truffle (Kanukalos Burletta), owned by Caron & John McClure, and not their youngster, Miya..maybe next time for her. This win makes Truffle top Hovawart for the third year in a row, and her total of best-of-sex wins at championship shows with separate classes (+the club show) to 15, 13 with best-of-breed, from 2018 to now. This made me look at the past, and I find that by far and away the most successful Hovawart has been Gina Challoner’s Tarn (Homestead Adriana of Trepur) who took BoS 35 times (15 BoB) during the 11 years from 1985-95. Starting a couple of years later, Julie Condron’s Buster (Buster vh Norelbosch) racked up 20 wins (13 BoB), so a lot of shows must have had the same results, as Buster continued until 1995 as well. However, the dog record is held by Min Inches’ Cody (Pines Douglas of Minches) with 22 (16) during the years 1995-2004, with Ann Travis’ bitch Beck (NL.Ch. Pines Tipperary for Annvad) equalling Buster’s 20, but with an impressive 17 BoBs, between 1999 and 2006. Truffle is in there with a whole lot of others with similar totals, but has a great chance of getting those extra wins to lift her clear of the pack, despite the loss of classes we have suffered of late.

Isn’t it disquieting to read about people getting hip scored from Australia? Not because there is any problem with them doing it, far from it, but because it would appear that we have been being, to use a phrase from a currently running TV show, ripped off for a while now. I don’t know what has been happening here, but in so many areas, the UK has become the most expensive place to get things done, from Covid tests to energy prices. I feel it is a combination of complacency by the providers, especially when, like the KC in the case of hip scores, they feel they have a virtual monopoly, and inertia on the part of the consumers, you and me, who just do what they did last time round without giving it a second thought. Maybe this is the wake-up call that is needed.

One of the real bonuses of modern communications was brought home to me this week, when the new owners from our last litter all decided to get together in an exclusive Whatsap group, just so that they can compare notes and progress. They have graciously allowed us, the breeders, and Maggie, the owner of the sire of the litter, to join in, and we have already had the pleasure of seeing lots of cute photos of the puppies. I think also that it will provide reassurance to owners who in the past might have felt a bit isolated, and maybe reluctant to keep bombarding their breeders with questions (although we are always happy to try to help) that there are others they are constantly in touch with who are probably experiencing similar issues as they are.
