Breed Notes - 7 Nov 2021
My apologies for the shortage of notes over the last few weeks, no real excuses, I’m afraid. I hope that Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night passed without incident or anxiety for you. We try to desensitise our puppies to noises and alarms from the first days they can hear by playing discs with all sorts of commotions every day, which does seem to help them in later life. Where we are now, we don’t get them, but our last house was on the RAF flight path which they used for “under the radar” flying of jets, so the puppies were immune to almost any loud noise you could think of.

When John had to stand in as judge at the last minute at the Club show last month, it set me thinking about our extreme shortage of breed specialist judges at the moment. I am pleased to say that the Club are organising a judging seminar and BAD day for next October, so that there will be a really worthwhile weekend, as the usual show will follow on the Sunday, and if the Covid situation allows, we will hopefully have the other activities, like Obedience and KC Good Citizen tests as well. To revert to the shortage of breed specialists, this will be an opportunity for people to start on the judging ladder, and personally I do very much feel that those who exhibit their dogs, certainly on anything like a regular basis, should put back into the “sport” by undertaking stewarding and judging. There are some people who positively enjoy the job, but from my point of view, I do it purely because I see it as a duty that I owe to the breed and its future.

Some happy news from just down the road, Maggie’s Cello is in whelp to her Harris, with puppies due in a couple of weeks or so. This will be effectively a repeat of our litter from earlier this year, as Cello is our Kibble’s litter sister. We were very pleased with our ten pups, so fingers crossed that Maggie’s experiences match ours. As our Thursday turned two back in the summer, our thoughts turned to her breeding future, and on paper it seemed sensible to be considering maybe her next season, but looking at her, she is still such a juvenile that we have put such ideas on the backburner for the moment. I think that this is very much in line with the evidence at the Club show, where it was very noticeable that maturity in the Hovawart is something that starts to be apparent at three or four, and the dogs are coming to their best a couple years further on. We also thought about looking abroad for potential stud dogs, as the choice in UK is somewhat limited, but of course Covid restrictions need to be considered. Our breed experience of AI can best be described as patchy, but it may be that we will have to persevere with it…perhaps practice will make perfect in the end.

I m still hoping to get to LKA…I have now had my booster jab !!....and I notice that entries can now be made for the Manchester Championship show, our day is Saturday January 22nd, at the County Showground, Stafford, with Mrs Patsy Hollings centre ring, and for the National Working & Pastoral Society’s regular open show at the Sports Connexion, Coventry, on February 12th , again a Saturday, this time with Marion Sargent presiding. The Manchester show is the last qualifier for Crufts, and both events will give good practice opportunities for that show. As we saw at the Club show, the long lay-off has left some of the youngster a bit ring rusty, so these two could be just what is needed.

Going round the garden centre with Thursday this morning (it’s an excellent place for socialisation….and the breakfasts are most enjoyable too), I noticed a whole rack devoted to Christmas jumpers for dogs……heaven help us !!!
