Breed Notes - 13 Jan 2009
By: Elaine Betts

I have had an e mail from Julia Christopherson announcing that “All about Dogs”, held for several years in Brentwood Essex, has been cancelled. This smashing event has always been about promoting dog ownership in the very best light, and was organised by doggie people for doggie people. It was the largest and most comprehensive outdoor dog event of its kind, and for our breed was a good event to give the general public a chance to meet a Hovawart that otherwise just wouldn’t happen. The reason given by Brentwood Council was that it was no longer viable, due to changes in council policies of competitive tendering for events. Dog events and dogs in general seem to be going through a bad patch at the moment, and I wonder what will be nextt?

Bettina's husband Andrew has been flying the flag for our breed recenty, when they completed their first 'Canine Corss' race in Cannock Chase on the 28th December, the season has just started and Andrew and Jackson have signed up for another race in Surrey and one during Crufts. Well done Andrew and Jackson. More congratulations needed as Harvey (with his owners Susie and John) have achieved the Gold Good Citizens award recently. Quite an achievement with a big bouncy boy, still a puppy.

Accredited breeders have been invited to attend a lecture on Genetics by the KC. One or both of us will try and attend this meeting, which hopefully will be aimed at a level to make it both interesting and informative. I will report back if we make it.

Julie has given me the number of UK qualifiers for Crufts this year, 22 dogs (4 black, 6 blond and 12 black/gold) and 32 bitches (4, 7 & 22); of course this doesn’t mean they will all enter, but it does give us a good base, and there will be a smattering of overseas competitors, I expect, for Michael Quinney to assess.

News has just reached me that the accident on the M6 that delayed the judging at LKA involved Hovawart exhibitors Pam & Lucy Campbell, with “Levi”. He was unhurt, but rather shaken and a bit clingy for the next few days. Back to normal now, thankfully, and Lucy and Pam were also happily unhurt. I will not go into details, but it sounds absolutely horrendous. They got home in the afternoon, missing the show of course, but their car is in a terrible state. Lucy is 21 today (12th) so we wish her a very happy birthday, and better (and safer!!) showing in 2009 !!
