Breed Notes - 7 Jan 2014
Julie has sent me details of the Hovawarts that have qualified for this year’s Crufts. Firstly, last year’s show provided 5 UK dogs, 1 Irish and 3 from the continent, together with 5 UK bitches, 3 Irish and 2 from the continent. The shows throughout the year produced a further 4 UK dogs and 1 from Eire, and 13 more UK bitches. By my reckoning, that makes the potential UK entry 9 dogs and 18 bitches, and Mick Murphy tell me that there are 11 Irish qualifiers , I think including those already mentioned, but he didn’t give a breakdown between the sexes, so that makes 38 + the continental qualifiers, who are difficult to track down, and therefore an unknown quantity, in every sense.
One thing Julie did point out is that a win at the Club Show doesn’t count as a qualifying win. The merits or otherwise of that situation may make an interesting debate, bearing in mind the relatively large entries there and the very small numbers at the championship shows, but that is very much out of our hands, not least because Crufts is the KC show, and they set the rules.
At the 12 championship shows that gave us breed classes, there were 6 different Best Dogs, with Julie’s Gunner and Jenny & Charlie’s Sefton winning 3 times each. Gunner won the BoB “contest” 2-1. In bitches there were 8 different Best Bitches, with the plaudits going to Ann’s Farica, with 3 wins (1 BoB), which makes Gunner “top dog”. In puppies, there were only 2 occasions when any were shown, and our Flag and Ann’s Grizelda each won once.

John and I took the opportunity of our daughter’s stay over the Christmas period to go to a Working Trial in Yorkshire, necessitating an overnight stay. Everything was super except our performance at the trial, but it did give us the chance to see the coastline. I have seen the erosion of cliff on the TV, but in real life it is very unnerving. The tarmac on the road just stops, and Acorn, who could see this vast expanse of water in front of her, was all for diving in….over a 60 foot sheer drop!! Thank heavens for strong leads!!

I hope the awful weather isn’t causing any of you too much difficulty or anxiety. Let’s hope for a decent Spring and Summer.
