Breed Notes - 12 Feb 2014
I got quite a surprise when I read in last week’s DW our entries for Crufts. I can’t remember when we last had 19 dogs entered, but John has looked back over the last few years and tells me that it is the second highest number ever, 2 more than last year, and only one short of the all-time best of 20 in 2010. Bearing in mind the very low entry levels at Championship shows last year, I can only presume that we have attracted entries from the continent, which always makes for interest and excitement. Sadly the bitch entry of 18 is the least since 2005. Let’s hope we have some dry weather to come, I don’t reckon long car journeys will be much fun for people travelling from the Continent. Several of my training sessions have been cancelled, and tracking anywhere at the moment is nearly impossible. With three girls in season though, maybe it’s a good time to get that over with, especially with Crufts fast approaching. Ducks seem to be quite happy, but all the other animals have really been suffering here in Hereford, and wet dog towels are hanging in the kitchen almost permanently.
Did everybody watch the dog food programme - The Truth About Your Dogs Food, on Channel V a couple of weeks back? If I were involved in the manufacture of dried dog food I would be pushing to make a similar programme about dried food, as the editors didn’t give dried food companies any “say” at all. I think I am rather in the middle, and have fed over the years both raw and home cooked food, as well as the dried kibble type. With one or more dogs it is quite easy to feed raw, and our butcher sells nice bags of fresh offcuts and offal, but with seven big dogs the quantity gets more difficult, and the convenience of dried food comes into its own during the hot summer months. With a dog quite recently living a full active life until 15 odd years, and everything looking shiny and trim, I am not sure that I want to change, although I am beginning to feel guilty that I may be feeding maize etc. that officially isn’t supposed to be good for them. I remember talking to the very elderly lady that left me the affix “PINES” forty years ago, and she said during the war there was no such thing as dog food, but she kept her kennels going on buckets of blood and sawdust! (come to think of it dogs do seem to like wood!) I guess it was that or nothing. I must say that as a club we do get wonderful sponsorship from complete dog food manufacturers, which is a great help. Still thinking about this one, I’m not sure enough one way or the other. I suppose the only way to go is to be guided by your own dogs’ condition. One thing I would say, though, is if you are going to change your feeding regime, make that change gradually over several days, so the dogs can get used to it easily.
