Breed Notes 14 Apr 2014
First I would like to send my wishes to John and Elaine after their loss of Orchid, Kynyaf Tia of Pines CDEX, UDEX, just over 12 years, Orchid was such a special dog making her mark in breed history with both awards in working trials and being the only Hovawart to have been short listed in the group at crufts, Elaine had such a special bond with her as most owners have who compete in trials as you have to work as a team, she was a beautiful B/G and will always be remembered, bred by Janet kibble and the only comfort at the moment will be that she will live on through her progency, as she was a wonderful mother. Our thoughts are with you John & Elaine.
Update on our dog who was very unwell with an unknown illness with our vet possibly going down the lines of an exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or Addisons disease and the last time I spoke about it in these notes we were being referred to the vet school in Glasgow. Xrays were performed and ultra sound with a full work up of bloods with special tests being carried out at Cambridge, so it did take a while to get all the results but everything has come back clear with only a lower level of protein in the biochem results. Good news that it is not the above however we are still puzzled about what could be wrong. A months course of metronidazole and Oxytetracycline has certainly improved things with the diarrhoea now stopped and with weight gain and an improved coat he is certainly looking better , but still under weight. His background is that Sarah my wife wanted a dog to work in obedience and we lost our last Border collie many years ago and a friend had just happened to text me to say that she new of an 18 month old who was working sheep but not enthusiastic enough for the farmer and would we be interested, he is a smooth coat registered with ISDS. He is called Roy and what a lovely natured collie he is, not got a bad word to say, was quiet when we got him but had never been in a house before so had alot to adjust to. Now his energy levels are much better and he could work sheep no problem now. The stool culture grew clostridium which many dogs can carry with no problems in their gut but was their too much of this bacteria and was it producing toxins, so the stool sample has been sent off for a toxin screen but still awaiting results of this. He still has this over whelming desire to eat long dry tough grass that you get on marsh type ground, he seems to seek it out and just pulls at this type of grass swallowing its long strands , which becomes a problem at the other end when it doesn’t come out !! So trying to over come this issue at the moment, it certainly isn’t normal to eat and behave this way . The vet school still think something is amiss but at the moment we will wait and see. Many thanks to Ann Kelly who had read my Breed notes in Our Dogs and gave me advice re EPI, it is lovely that people of all breeds can come together and help each other when things can go wrong. Thank you.
Next week we have Working & pastoral breeds of Wales CH show with 6 entires making an overall entry of 10, we are third in the ring for Judge Mr Rees, so good luck to all who have entered and will report on the results along with how the AGM went.
