Breed Notes - 7 Aug 2014
If I were ever tempted to give a litter of puppies their first inoculations before sending them off to their new homes, I have just experienced first-hand that it can be at best a waste of money and at worst, I suspect, an opportunity to administer additional chemicals to a young dog. Our new puppy came with a certificate showing that he had received his first vaccination against all the usual “nasties”, and indeed his breeder was pleased at the thought that he was being diligent and helpful. Taking young “Dublin” to our vet for what I thought was the second shot, I was informed that he would again have to have his first vaccination, followed in due course by the second, as the one he had already received might not be compatible with the ones our vet uses. We have heard that not all vets take this view, but ours said that in the event of any problems, the drug company would divest itself of any responsibility because the two shots were made by different companies. My concern is that this consideration appeared to be more important than my puppy being overdosed with inoculations.
We have just had a chat to Mick Murphy, who is taking his young dog, Guinness, to the World Show in Finland. He stopped off in Lithuania for a couple of back-to-back shows last weekend, with considerable success. On Saturday, he was BoB, and was actually pulled out in the Group, a very rare event for a Hovawart…Mick said it was only the second time for him in 20 years of showing the breed. At the show on Sunday, he won BD, but had to give best to the bitch. Evidently, it was very hot, 34 degrees, and from experience I would say that is a very rare thing for a dog from the Emerald Isle to have to cope with! It will be really interesting to hear how he fares on Friday.
With the deadline for booking car park space for the KC “Discover Dogs” event at Earls Court on November 8th & 9th looming large, it is that time again when the call goes out for volunteers to help run the Hovawart stand. Your dog will have to cope with being petted for up to 4 hours non-stop, and you will have to answer the public’s questions for the duration, but it is actually a rewarding experience, so if you think you would like to help, please contact me. My details are at the end of this piece. This will be the last time the event will be at Earls Court, as it is moving to the ExCeL centre, in Docklands, a mile or two further east, next year. It really won’t be so easy to get to, so maybe a rethink on how we cope will have to be undertaken.
Results are just in from the show at Paignton yesterday, and it is lovely to see Ann Travis back in the ring, winning BoB with her Farica (Annvad Lady Farica), and taking RBB with Grizelda (a. Princess Grizelda) for good measure. Best Dog was Val Shone’s Minches Jet of Zwartbos, following up his win at National Working. I think both ladies (and their teams) deserve all the plaudits for getting to the show, which is a really long journey for both of them, and on a weekday at that. Our judge was Robin Searle, so there is no doubt that the proceedings were conducted in the most proper and courteous manner.
