Breed Notes - 21 Oct 2014
With the Club show still fresh in the memory, it was good to have the judge’s critique to view on the Club website already. As we have a relatively small entry (36 were shown), it was possible for our German judge, Kirsten Wesche, to use the continental approach of assessing each dog and grading and critiquing them all, and not just the first couple of places we are used to here. This is most instructive, as we get a better overall view of the breed strengths and weaknesses in this way. For example, Kirsten was not impressed by the standard of dental cleanliness she found, but appeared to find our temperaments to be very friendly. Certainly, she had confidence enough to do her own checking of bites, rather than expecting the handlers to hold the exhibit’s mouth for inspection. To be honest, she wasn’t the quickest judge we have had, but as can be seen in her writing, she is up there with the most thorough, and no-one can complain at that.
Helen and Nick have posted a delightful little piece…I don’t know what those little 90 second films are called…on You Tube, showing Freya dosing with her 8 pups round her. They look amazingly good and solid for such young ones, and they were a couple of days early to boot. We hope to be able to visit in a couple of weeks, when Acorn attempts her first WD Trial, and then we go on to Earls Court for Discover Dogs on the Sunday. I do hope Lloyd is well for that, because he has some spectacular ideas for the stand decorations, and without him, it will look very bare indeed.
I have had a couple of phone calls this week from potential owners asking me to highlight the main differences between the sexes (apart from the obvious) – this may be connected to Nick and Helen’s six dog puppies. We talk though the size, weight, strength, scent marking, sex , castration but when all is said and done, I think it is a matter of personal choice and if the new owner wants a bitch, I think they really should wait and have what they want. Everything comes to he who waits….eventually. What I do know is that once a puppy has worked its way into your affections, he or she will be the one for you.
