Breed Notes - 16 Dec 2014
Poppy is here, and now, after only 9 days it feels as though she has always been here. I must say I am impressed by the speed of acclimatisation she has shown. The first night we had about ten minutes’ howling, but otherwise she has been very accepting of what must seem great restrictions on her freedom compared with what she enjoyed with Nick and Helen, and has been remarkably unfased by the other dogs in the place. Indeed, when Little Dorrit, who she can go eye-to-eye with, thought she might care for a view of her teeth, Poppy returned the compliment...something to watch out for in the future! Neither Whistle nor Flag, who don’t seem to possess a maternal bone between them, care greatly for her, but Dublin has never had a better toy, and Acorn perhaps sees her as the puppy she missed out on from her Irish adventure. So far, so good, but I can see that my training time and ability are going to be severely stretched in the months to come, and heaven knows what we will do when seasons start again, as Dublin is definitely growing up.
Liz has been in touch to say that the Club received an “excellent” grading from the KC field officer who attended the show in October. After the collective sigh of relief should come the quiet satisfaction of a job well done, but no-one should underestimate the amount of work that went into making it a success, and the “swan” analogy is most apt, serene on the surface, with an awful lot going on under the water. A lot of people muck in to make it work, but there is no doubt that the real praise should go to Liz, and I hope she feels aware of how much her efforts are appreciated by all of us involved.
In terms of organised dog activities, it is I suppose the close season, but that is not an excuse to lay off the walks and excerise....in fact they are more needed with all the Christmas fare that will be consumed in the coming days. Don’t forget that things like chocolates and grapes are very much not good news for your dog, and I would like to wish anyone reading this a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
