Lloyd Spencer was on the answer phone this afternoon when I got back from a dog walk, very pleased to report that Maggie was leaving hospital today, and that she was moving around, well ahead of normal progress. After two cancellations they must be thrilled the operation is over, and now she can get on with physio and all the special exercises she will need to do. Maggie’s target will be the start of the Obedience season which I think is April. I know I speak for all of us when I say “Get Well Soon Maggie, but take it easy!”

Puppy Poppy went to her first Ringcraft class this week, and exploded into the hall as if she had been there a dozen times before. Shiny floor, no problem, lots of big dogs, no problem, of course she would not stand still to be gone over, and jumped up and down a soon as I tried to walk in a straight line! If I had ever been in any doubt that the “working” qualifications of her sire had influenced her personality, they have been completely dispelled! A small Spitz dog showed her his teeth, and an undeterred Poppy showed him hers.
The last time I had such a “strong” puppy was Orchid, who also had an advanced Schutzhund qualification against her sire’s name. It’s great on the one hand, and you feel that they must have been here before, but I did just wonder whether all the puppies would have the same tendencies, and how the new “pet” owners would be getting on. The Hovawart is very much a working dog, but the working bit can be to a greater or lesser degree, and I am just hanging on by my finger nails to this “busy” bombshell of a puppy. My hands are a mass of scars, my coats and jumpers are a mass of holes, and the washing is off the line and in the mud. John tells me it is just a short phase she is going through, we will see.
The next show is National Working Open with Eileen Matthews judging at Coventry in a couple of weeks. I hope she has a good entry, because she needs to judge a few more dogs to progress on the club judging list. I hope we may see you there.
