Dam and blast – would you believe it, our Acorn has come into season early. Normally it is a time of much rejoicing as we had been planning a litter with her this year, but with John judging Crufts next month, hopefully all the lovely boys will attend, thereby making it unethical for us to use any of them at stud with our girl! Will we ever manage a litter with Acorn I wonder? On the flip side I guess it means training can continue for that elusive WD in working trials in a couple of weeks’ time.
Had a very cold, but nevertheless enjoyable evening this evening, attending a Canine First Aid cause at a local Agricultural Centre. We sat on big bales of shredded horse bedding and were served mugs of hot soup whilst two young ladies from the Animal Health Education took us through the A – Z of First Aid. Some of the advice was common sense, but I did learn a few tips about choking, foreign bodies, and how to take a dog’s temperature with an up–to-the-minute rectal thermometer, which is very much easier than trying to see the mercury in the old fashioned one I have. I can now find a dog’s pulse, can see whether he/she is dehydrated, and correctly bandage a foot. I hope I never need any of it, but it is one of those things that may one day just help an injured dog. I thought I needed first aid myself after over two hours in a huge concrete barn in minus zero temperatures, I couldn’t feel my feet or legs at the end, and had the heater on full blast all the way home in the car.
One piece of good news, I came home to an email from Lloyd that not only contained some recently rediscovered photos from when our hair didn’t need colouring, but also the news that Maggie was making swifter progress with her second new knee than she had with the first one. I just hope she doesn’t try to run before she can walk!
