Breed Notes - 1 Apr 2015
Can’t believe Easter is just next weekend, where does the time go, it seems like a fortnight ago it was Christmas ,and now we are into summer time already.

John and I did something last week that in a lifetime of dogs I have never done before, - we re-homed our two year old bitch called Flag.

Flag is an easy going, well trained (ready to compete in WT at CD level) thoroughly good dog, and it is through no fault of hers that she is lacking a real purpose in our household. We had long ago decided against puppies with her, because neither Flag’s mother nor grandmother had taken to motherhood, and with this leaving big litters of puppies to feed almost completely by hand, this was not something to be continued. Flag quite enjoys dog shows, but is not well marked and doesn’t particularly catch the eye, as she is neither particularly pretty nor commanding of appearance and size, and lacks the full glamourous Hovawart coat that is so typical of our breed, so usually came away with a third or fourth card. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it is not quite what we were striving for.

As anybody who trains their dog for a specific discipline will know, training is very time consuming and I am working hard on Acorn, Dublin, and new puppy Poppy for WT, so the opportunities to compete with Flag are going to be very limited, and the youngsters have windows of opportunity which cannot be missed.

A perfect home has presented itself, and we jumped at the opportunity. The new owners are experienced, having had a Hovawart bitch from us years ago that had died suddenly a few months back. The couple are retired and at home all day every day, love walking, they are wonderful people whom we trust totally and it is working beautifully so far, and Flag is special and an adored only pet.

Do we miss her ?– yes. Were we sad ?– yes, but she is loved, and cherished and happy, and enjoying a fuller life being a single pet with her own family now, and if we could ask her I hope she would agree that we did the right thing .

I think there may be another “first” for a Hovawart coming up on Easter Monday, when Mark Harrison competes officially for the first time with Milo in a Canicross event at Catton Hall in Derbyshire. I hope to be able to say more about this next week, but in the meantime we wish them really good luck for Monday. If anyone else takes part in things with their Hovawart, please let me know about it, because we are always looking to add to the range of activities that owners and their dogs can enjoy together.
