Breed Notes - 20 Apr 2015
It was Working & Pastoral breeds association of Wales CH show on Saturday where our judge Mr Stubbs had entry of 10 with his BOB, BD AND BP going to John and Elaines “ Dublin”, his posh name, Junior Jester at Pines. Dublin has done very well as he achieved the same results at Manchester CH show earlier this year, John & Elaine must be delighted. BB went to Zwartbos Moet owned by Mrs & Mr Robinson & Brown with the reserves going to Mr Harrison‘s dog Pines Wiggins and reserve bitch going to Ann Travis and Annvad Lady Farica. Well done to all and an entry of 10 is great as our numbers over the last few years have been low so lets hope it is the start of things to come. I believe that the entry at Birmingham National is also 10 for our judge Mr Killilea with 3 breeds in the ring before us. We are on the Thursday 7th May in ANNEXE 2 , ring 9. I wish everybody good luck.

The breed seminar and hands on assessment that the club is hosting on Sunday 14th June at Nesscliffe Village hall still has places available for the afternoon assessment. The morning seminar is open to all at a cost of £10 or £25 for the full day. This is a great opportunity to learn the finer points that make a hovawart what it is and having the ability to see dogs and getting your hands on them. At a recent seminar I attended , a breed club secretary discussed that in her breed who is a non cc breed at present, would put on a judging seminar with hands on every year, and found it difficult to fill those places as judges weren’t interested in attending, the reply was wait until you get cc’s and everybody will want on your assessment days, and I suppose that is true as how many people will want to travel and spend time and money for a rare breed ? I know with a national club it is difficult but I do wonder if these seminars could be held in different locations throughout the country with north and south alternating each year and that could help with attendance, allowing judges to travel a reasonable distance to attend one. Anyway it is an idea that could be looked at. I remember speaking to another person in a cc breed , and how I was saying this weekend I was travelling down south to an open show who had Hovie classes scheduled, he looked at me strangely and said your travelling from Scotland to attend an open show down south? But this is what you do when trying to get a breed established, by supporting as many classes as possible. More info re the seminar on the clubs website.

The revised and updated manual “an owners guide to the hovawart “ is now ready to be purchased, it has been updated by various people within the breed and put together by Nick. I believe it looks good and costs £10 then just add postage, they are available from John Sharpe. I will discuss next week the updated addition to the thyroid testing of stud dogs and bitches prior to mating that has been adopted by the clubs code of ethics at the recent AGM.
