Breed Notes - 7 Jul 2015
Rescue dogs seem to be like buses – nothing about for ages, and then two come along very close to each other. We had an e mail from a very young distressed French lady living in Brighton last week asking for help with her 11 month old bitch Hovawart. She had travelled to UK to work at a hairdressing saloon in the city and thought it would be nice to have her young dog with her for company. No, wrong, hours out at work, living in a tiny flat with a small shared garden! This is certainly no place for a dog, never mind a busy working breed. This poor thing had been shut up in a garden shed in the owner’s absence and of course had been causing problems with the other garden users, making a noise etc. The breeder of this puppy, in France, thankfully, has agreed to have her back (quite correct too) and so that is what John will be doing this weekend, accompanying a little French lass back home. (purchasing a French lemon tart for me en route)

Is this something we will be doing more often now that owners from all over Europe travel to the UK and in some cases they bring their dogs with them. I don’t know where our UK rescue stands on this, and I did wonder whether we will have to confine our efforts in re-homing UK bred dogs. Our resources are not unending and I am frightened that this little French bitch may be just the tip of an iceberg.

Some show news…at Windsor Show, which always was one of our favourites, but as yet hasn’t given us classes but with a big nudge might like to consider us for the future, Lucy Campbell won Best Puppy and Reserve Best Dog with her youngster Ace (Quincebois Ironwood), and Sue Scully’s Lilly (Pines Meditation) match him by taking Reserve Best Bitch. It is good to see people flying the flag for our breed even without special classes. Maybe one day we will get into the main stream.

It is Malvern this coming weekend, and the National Working & Pastoral show, with Stuart Mallard as our judge. Hopefully it won’t be too hot for the dogs. This Venue is very beautiful, but boy can it be hot there if there isn’t a breeze. I’ll report back next week on how it all went off.
