Breed Notes - 11 Aug 2015
It is very encouraging to hear about Hovawarts being successful in spheres of activity that involve their considerable talents, as well as the beauty they exhibit in the show ring, and I have a couple of examples this week. Firstly, in Rally, Liz and Lynne’s Drift qualified RL2 at the Midland Border Collie Club…I don’t know why, but it is always particularly satisfying to do well in front of border collies. Another example, I am sure, is Paula Foakes’ Merlot, who won his second “A” at the Woburn Obedience Show at the weekend. I don’t know how many competitors were in her class, but it can, and often is up to 60, and a large proportion of them will have been border collies too. Merlot only needs one more win to graduate to “B”. I also hear rumours of people (and hovawarts) competing in Cani-Cross, and I hope those involved will patch me in on their achievements.

This coming weekend we are expecting to have a visit from Eva from the Czech Republic, who is bringing over three puppies for homes in England. I feel it is such a pity that they have to wait until they are nearly 4 months old before they can come over the water, but that is how the law is at present, and knowing Eva, these puppies will have had as good a start in life as is possible. I am hearing of more and more occasions of people going to continental breeders to get puppies, which is a reflection on the infrequency of litters born here. Mostly, these puppies are purely pets, although we do try to encourage new owners to take an active interest in breed activities, even if it is only an annual appearance at the Club Show, for which, incidentally, schedules are now available on the club website, or by post from our amazing secretary, Liz. Whilst talking about puppies, I’ve had an email from the owner of a bitch from Poland that was shown this year at Crufts, to say she is in whelp. The whole of the Hovawart world is getting smaller by the day.
