Breed Notes - 11 Nov 2015
News just in that Mark Tyerman took the honours at Scottish Working and Pastoral Breeds at the weekend with Teddy (Fasskoleys Mathan), now in his prime at just over 8 years old. This has proved to be a good show for his breeder Anne Stewart, as Fasskoleys dogs have won for the past 3 years, and indeed Teddy himself won back in 2008. This breed certainly has staying power. Maggie Spencer has drawn an entry of 13 for next Sunday’s Camberley show, and we are amazingly first in the ring. Judging starts at 10 o’clock, so bang goes the Sunday morning lie-in.

Min Inches has calculated how many Hovawarts have been registered in the UK, and has come up with a figure in the region of 650 (sorry, I can’t locate the exact number) since Tobias and Assi in 1979. With the longevity that our breed has in general, this would give a current population in the UK of something in the region of 250, so the Club should be very proud of the entry of 50 at the recent show. Imagine 20% of Labradors or some other breeds at a single show !

It certainly looks as though the new Facebook Group for Hovawarts, Hovawarts UK, has really taken off. Every day new pictures and news comes on the screen here, especially the latest puppies in their new homes, and are very much enjoyed. It seems that this is the way of communicating these days, so I will have to find out how to join in properly, and post pictures myself. The proverb about old dogs and new tricks has never been more apt.

There are still some calendars available, and would make the ideal gift for those friends who need reminding what a Hovawart looks like, and what sort of activities we get up to, as well as an essential adjunct for every kitchen, office and dog room wall. Details are on the Club website, but it is as well to get yours ordered to avoid disappointment.

One of the topics on the addenda of last Sunday’s committee meeting was the need to replenish the funds specifically designated for “rescue”, and it looks as though John will be re-introducing the 100 club, last employed when we were fund-raising for the IHF Conference weekend in 2012, so stand by for further information shortly.
