Breed Notes – October 11 2024

As promised here are some more in-depth results from The Hovawart Club of GB Open Show held on 29th September at Oswestry Agricultural Showground. Due to the weather forecast that there was rain due later in the day our judge Beatrice Holder agreed that in fairness for all competitors that we would be indoors so if the rain appeared all would be on a level playing field.

The day started with Maggie Spencer and myself doing a training session with anyone who wanted to join in either to settle themselves and/or their hovie and to learn what to expect when in the showing class, it is a light hearted training session but hopefully put a few handler nerves to rest so they could enjoy their time in the ring showing off their beautiful dog to its best advantage. Remember whatever the result you always take the best dog home.

I enjoyed my day judging Good Citizens at the club show on 29th September.  I seem to have been doing this for more years than I can remember, only interrupted by Covid lockdowns. I always look forward to my day with beautiful dogs and lovely friendly people.

The results this year were as follows:

BRONZE. 3 dogs tested.

1. Barry Shaverin with Polo. He had been unaware of the Good Citizen testing but felt sure Polo could cope and they did everything very well. So much so that they went on to tackle the Silver level.

2. Michelle Niblock with Boycee. He is still a young dog but did all the exercises really well.

3. My final contestant was Tallie the labrador  with Sabine Kanzaria (the Rally lady). Tallie was rather frightened by a hovi that leapt up as we were making our way out of the hall so we did all the test exercises outside and she did very well.

SILVER. 2 dogs tested.

1. Sabine again with her Cavalier KCS, Josie.  I remember Josie doing Bronze a few years ago. She did very well and achieved her Silver level.

2. The other Silver dog was Polo with Barry who had passed Bronze earlier in the day. It is allowed to do 2 levels at one testing session but not with the same judge. Fortunately qualified tester Kathleen  Woodger  was on hand to do the testing and Polo passed.

GOLD. 3 dogs tested.

1.Margaret Loxton with Wilfred.

2. Elaine Sharpe with Nutmeg.

Both of them did very well and achieved the Gold level.

3. Laura Hatt with Edmund.  Many of the Gold exercises have to be done outside and off lead. Edmund’s young male brain had other distractions in mind and he just couldn’t concentrate. Laura sensibly decided not to attempt the off lead work so he had to be judged as”Not Ready”. Better luck next time Laura.

I know doing Good Citizen tests can be quite daunting, especially for newer handlers. I have done them many times with my own dogs and getting to Gold level can feel like climbing a mountain and does not get any less nerve racking. So congratulations to you all for doing it.

Maureen Taylor.

The Auction and Raffle were well supported the raffle raised £170 the Auction £230, this is the start for the clubs fundraising as we will be hosting the International Hovawart Federation Conference and show in 2027. There was an amazing spread of sandwiches and cakes of all sorts. Thank you to all who contributed. There was a suggestion box for any suggestions for the club and show to improve and I am sure at the next committee meeting all suggestions will be discussed.  Put the date of Sunday 5th October 2025 in your diary for next year’s show.

Friday 11th October at The South Wales Association Championship Show at Builth Wells with Mr R A W Searle taking centre stage. We are in Hall 3 Ring 13 there are 12 Hovawarts entered judging starts at 10am we are in the ring after 25 Welsh Corgi’s (Cardigan) 11 Catalan Sheepdogs and Pyrenean Sheepdogs which do not have any entries, so hopefully not a long wait. They do ask that we take your own chairs.

Please let me know your news and views.
